Surrey Independent Midwives is an independent practice providing holistic care for pregnancy and birth in the Southern Counties and South and South-West London. What is Independent Midwifery ?
The
word midwife means “with-woman”. We
are specialists fully trained to care for women and their babies throughout
pregnancy, the birth and into parenthood. We
are all passionate about our work.
As
independent midwives we work outside of the NHS and provide care based on
research as well as experience. All of us are active in keeping the
traditional role of midwifery alive through our practice and also politically.
We are registered to practice with the
United Kingdom Central Council for Nursing Midwifery and Health Visiting and
abide by the Midwife’s Rules and Code of Practice.
Each of us has a named supervisor of midwives who we see annually for a
supervisory meeting and to assess the safety of our equipment.
We are all members of the Royal College of
Midwives (RCM), the Independent Midwives Association (IMA) and the Association
of Radical Midwives (ARM).
There
are regular IMA clinical meetings where we all exchange skills and update our
knowledge on current midwifery events and research.
As Surrey Independent Midwives we hold weekly meetings for support and to share information updating our practice. We also discuss each of our bookings familiarising ourselves with each other’s clients.
